Degaussing

Post by Devil Soundwave »

Chaps,

My cab is displaying a purple patch to one side. It would appear that the degaussing loop is too small for the monitor as it doesn;t fit round the edge of the tube properly.

Does anyone know where I can buy / how I can make a new one?

The Monitor is 20 inch corner to corner with a viewable area of 19 inches, and it's a 1991 WellsGardner CRT.

Sorry - can a mod move this over to the monitor thread? I'm still getting used to the layout if the board! :)

check for an unshielded speakers nearby, move the cab by a few meters to see if the gaussing goes-if all this fails then either your degauss circuit is not functioning or you need a manual degauss wand to clear it up

Thanks for the advice man.

The purple patch was there when I picked up the machine, definately no speakers nearby (except the one in the cab - hmmmnnn). The spot is the same place on the screen even if I rotate the monitor, i.e., at the bottom in tate, to the left in normal.

Looking in the back, the degauss wire appears to have slipped off one side of the monitor - it fits nicely round one edge of the monitor (the edge without the issue), but is half way down the tube on the bad edge.

Looks like someone has looked at this before as it's all trussed up with old wire to try and hold it in place.

Problem is, I'm not sure that it's just slipped - it actually looks like it's too small and perhaps not the right one for this tube. Is this possible?

I'd like to try and push it back into place, but I'm not sure what I can and can't touch on the chassis or tube without getting fried. Is it *only* the anode under the cap that I need to avoid?

I did think about a degauss wand - would I have to use it every time I fire up the machine?

Thanks for your help in advance! :)

im pretty certain you wouldnt need to use a degaussing wand every time you fire it up - i certainly dont degauss my monitor from one week to the next...

You need to degauss any time you move the monitor. Indeed any time you move the cab - it's all to do with the magnetic field of the earth.

No, but you can make one apparently. I'll post the link I found when I get home as it's in my favourites on my home machine.

2 HDD magnets(or fairly powerful magnets) and a drill.....just search youtube or google if you need more info

should sort you out.....also try moving the cab around/turning left and right to see if it goes away....

as cools said, the earths magnetic pull affects CRT's....especially when they are moved around/rotated
on the loose

Hello
First post!

i got a 25" sony pvm monitor it's on it's side, it has colour fading and reds being off colour in the bottom left quarter of the screen, i tried waving a razor infront of it to degauss it as suggested on another forum and it seemed to help a bit but the fading/reds problem is still there, any ideas? do i need to use something stronger to degauss it? like this maybe:

Any help would be much appreciated :)
Thanks,

No worries. If that's the same as mine, which I think it is, it'll be able to run on 210 - 250 voltz so should be fine for UK power supply, but will be wired to a 2-pin plug. Just refit a UK plug (no earth wire) and you'll be good to go.

^ thanks again for the help, lucky i didn't have to fit a plug, it fit in my shaver adapter. But it doesn't seem to be working, it makes the monitor go crazy, i've been waiving it around infront of the monitor for ~30 seconds but if i turn it off while close to the monitor there is always a strange colour patch remaining somewhere on the screen (near the wand) and if i move it away from the monitor before turning it off the same problem area in the bottom left remains with faded colours and off colour reds...

is there a trick to using this degaussing wand? (should the monitor be off whan degaussing?) or is the tv bust?

again any help is much appreciated :)

yes the trick is as follows,
normally is best to degauss a screen with the monitor off/but not always
position the wand very close to the tube and in the centre, then using increasing spiral action bring the wand away from the tube whilst holding the wand activation switch down

^ thanks for the degaussing instructions :) unfortunately the problem with the monitor isn't going away, i tried it like you said 4 times with the monitor on/off and with it plugged in/not plugged in, and it's still got the faded colours/reds problem :( i will keep trying though, as the monitor is great apart from this.

any more things to try?
